3 Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Turns On & Off

An air conditioner that turns on and off multiple times does not take the time to cool your home, leaving you with an uncomfortable indoor environment. Turning on and off, also called short cycling, occurs due to an underlying problem. Below, we will discuss reasons for an AC system to short cycle in Lubbock, TX.

1. You Have an Oversized Air Conditioner

An oversized air conditioner has more capacity than your home’s cooling needs. As a result, it cools your house quickly and shuts down before completing a cycle.

Since it does not take time to distribute the cooled air evenly, it turns on again. The system repeats this process over and over. An oversized AC also does not take time to eliminate excessive humidity in your indoor air. This may promote the growth of biological contaminants.

These contaminants release spores that lower your indoor air quality. Consider getting a system that matches your indoor temperature needs.

2. Thermostat Errors

When you input your temperature requirements into the thermostat, the device signals the AC to regulate indoor temperatures. It also communicates with your HVAC system through wires. Frayed wiring can interfere with the communication between these two appliances.

It is not wise to troubleshoot your thermostat yourself unless you are a professional. This may cause more damage to the device. Instead, allow a technician to do the work for you since they know what to look for.

3. A Clogged Air Filter

A clogged air filter causes multiple AC problems, including short cycling, because it does not allow sufficient air to pass through. Your air conditioner will work harder to draw air through the filter. Overworking then causes the system to overheat.

Consequently, the system shuts down before completing a cycle as a safety precaution. It turns on again and turns off when it overheats. Consider checking and changing your filter every one to three months.
